Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), commonly known as tapping, is a practice that involves lightly tapping specific pressure/acupressure points on the body while focusing on a troubling issue and voicing affirmations or reminders. These acupoints are similar to those used in acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine.

Through this combination—body, mind (through focus on emotions/thoughts), and intention (through verbal statements)—EFT helps to rebalance the body’s energy system, calm the nervous system, and reduce emotional distress.

  • Identify the issue Start by being clear about what is bothering you—whether it’s anxiety, negative belief, physical discomfort, grief, or something else.
  • Measure intensity Use a subjective scale (0–10) to rate how intense the emotional or physical distress feels. This helps track progress.
  • Setup statement While tapping a specific point (often the side of the hand, “karate chop” point), you say a phrase acknowledging the issue plus a statement of self-acceptance. Example: “Even though I feel anxious about ____ , I deeply and completely accept myself.”
  • Sequence of tapping You tap through a sequence of points (forehead, above eyebrow, side of eye, under eye, under nose, chin, collarbone, underarm, top of head). Each point may be tapped while repeating short phrases related to the issue.
  • Re-evaluate At the end of a round, reassess the intensity. If needed, go through additional rounds until you feel a noticeable decrease in distress.
  • Reduced stress and anxiety — EFT has been shown in studies to significantly lower stress hormones (like cortisol) and reduce anxiety symptoms.
  • Relief from depression and emotional pain — EFT may be as effective as some conventional therapies for certain emotional conditions.
